Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The University of Minnesota's Graduate School offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees with emphases in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology from the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, which is a part of the College of Liberal Arts. Program requirements for the degree are specified both by the Graduate School and the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. The Ph.D. program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in research both across the field of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology and to prepare students to become independent scholars in the area of their choice. The curriculum of the doctoral program allows students maximum flexibility to select coursework within the discipline and across other disciplines, such as psychology, child development, special education, early childhood, cognitive sciences, and a wide range of other areas.

The Ph.D. program provides students with a strong foundation across the fields of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology.

Although graduate of the program may assume different professional paths such as the academic path at a college or university, a clinical path in an education, clinical, or private practice setting, or a research/clinical path in an industrial setting, the doctoral program is designed to educate students to develop strong research skills and to use their scholarly abilities in whatever professional setting they choose.
